Things to Consider Before You Buy that First Mod
Which Mod Will Deliver What You Want?
Mods are an investment. They can range from very affordable to very expensive. The first question you should ask before you slap down that hard-earned scratch is what kind of vaping experience you're looking for. Do you want a more satisfying draw? Are you craving the full flavor of an e-liquid? Or, do you really just want to produce some massive vapor like your cloud chasing friends?
The answer to this all-important question will help you select the perfect mod right out of the gate, and that's vital. Picking the wrong one can sour you on the whole experience. If you want big clouds of vapor, high wattage and low resistance ranges are a must. If you want a tight inhale, the airflow in the tank you choose matters. It all sounds overwhelming, but knowing what you want is the first step to choosing the perfect rig.
Mods Require More Attention to Detail
Your vape pen or cig-a-like is a pretty easy device to manage. All you really have to do is hit the fire button and take a draw. To get the full benefit of a mod, you're going to need to familiarize yourself with some basic details so that you can make tweaks to your mod's performance.
Mods allow you to control every aspect of vaping. You can adjust the temperature, wattage, voltage, and use different coil setups to achieve a wide range of resistance. If you're just starting out, keep it simple. Look for a mod that is user-friendly and one that won't give you a mental overload. Most of the details are intuitive. You'll master them as you go along, and it won't take a long time to do so.
The best way to learn about mods is to experiment with basic settings like temperature and wattage before you wade out into the deeper waters of resistance ranges, voltage, TCR mode, and the like. Just know that if you want to really appreciate that mod, paying attention to the details and learning is a must.
Mods are Basically a Battery and a Computer Chip
A mod itself is basically a miniature vaping computer. The mod either has a built-in or external rechargeable battery which supplies power to the rig and typically contains a computer chip which enables all of its functions. The computer chip in your mod is what allows you to communicate with the device and make various adjustments.
Some chipsets like the YiHi are very advanced and allow more functionality. As you might imagine, an advanced chipset can increase the cost of a mod. For your first mod, the chipset will probably be very basic and offer you minimal features. That's okay. You don't need a monster to begin, and some mods today promise everything short of being able to jumpstart your car.
Be sure to check whether or not you need to purchase a battery before choosing your mod. Trust us. Opening that new mod only to discover that you can't use it because you didn't buy batteries won't improve your frame of mind.
A Mod is Only A Mod
Something you are going to figure out quickly is that the term “mod” is often used to indicate the combination of a mod and a tank. Technically speaking, though, the mod itself is just the chassis which contains the battery and facilitates the vaping process. Unless you choose an AIO, or All-In-One, mod, you'll need to purchase a tank separately. It is also possible to purchase a kit which contains both a mod and a tank.
Tank selection is beyond the scope of what we're discussing here, but what you need to know now is that you must understand which type of tank your chosen mod will support. If you get the wrong tank and coil architecture, you won't be able to use your device.
Finally, don't be afraid to ask questions before buying your first mod. You'll discover that experienced vapers are a friendly bunch and happy to point you in the right direction.
